The manufacturing landscape is rapidly evolving, thanks to collaboration and innovation that are introducing smarter, more sustainable solutions across Europe. The Crowdhelix Manufacturing Helix is an open innovation platform that unites leading experts and organisations to advance manufacturing research and technology. Among its key initiatives is the CREDIT project, which sets new standards for circularity and digital innovation in the remanufacturing sector. With digital transformation and sustainability becoming increasingly vital, these efforts are not just enhancing production methods but also steering the industry towards a more resource-efficient and human-centred ecosystem.
Launched in early 2013, the Manufacturing Helix is one of the pioneering communities within the Crowdhelix network. The community is focused on advanced engineering, digital transformation, and collaborative problem-solving. It provides an environment for researchers, SMEs, and industry leaders to seek out partners, co-create solutions, and link academic innovations with practical industrial applications. The Manufacturing Helix encompasses a wide array of thematic areas, integrating expertise in smart manufacturing, mechanical engineering, remanufacturing, advanced production technologies, artificial intelligence, digital twins, robotics, additive manufacturing, and sustainable process industries.
Additionally, the Manufacturing Helix promotes cross-sector collaboration by engaging with other specialised Crowdhelix communities, such as Materials, Digital, Energy, and Circular Plastics. This integrated approach contributes to the dissemination of manufacturing practices and supports the transition to circular, low-carbon industrial models. The Helix’s influence is further enhanced by its global membership, which opens doors to networks and funding opportunities at both EU and international levels.
Central to the Helix’s current focus is the CREDIT project, which aims to transform the domain of circular remanufacturing through digital twin technologies and advanced digital services. Its mission is guided by a human-centric approach, aiming to enhance sustainability and efficiency across various industrial sectors. By facilitating virtual modelling of products and processes, CREDIT allows manufacturers to improve decision-making, increase traceability, and uphold high-quality standards, all while significantly minimising environmental impacts.
The Crowdhelix Manufacturing Helix and the CREDIT initiative shows how open innovation and international collaboration can drive significant change in manufacturing. By fostering global networks and developing innovative digital solutions, these projects not only advance scientific knowledge but also deliver tangible benefits to industry, society, and the environment.
