Over the past months, the webinar series
“Digital Solutions to Support the Circular Economy: New Strategies and Methodologies Compared”
brought together four EU-funded projects — AUTO-TWIN, DaCapo, DiCiM, and RESTORE — to explore how digital innovation can accelerate the transition towards circular value chains.
Organized by Syxis within the AUTO-TWIN project, and supported by ai4manufacturing , the series offered a unique opportunity for cross-project knowledge exchange, highlighting both shared challenges and promising solutions.
From Project Visions to Real-World Challenges
- Session #1 introduced the projects, their goals, and the contexts in which they operate. It became clear that while each project has a distinct focus, all are driven by the same ambition: using digital technologies to enable circular business models that balance profitability and sustainability.
- Session #2 moved from vision to practice, focusing on pilot activities and implementation. The discussions revealed recurring challenges such as data quality and availability, the complexity of industrial contexts, and the need for solutions that can scale beyond pilot phases.
- Session #3 closed the series with a reflection on lessons learned and future opportunities. Here, the emphasis shifted towards collaboration: what worked, what didn’t, and how insights from one project can inspire progress in another.
Shared Challenges, Shared Opportunities
Across all three sessions, several common themes emerged:
- Data remains a key barrier — ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and usability is essential for circular strategies to succeed.
- Understanding user needs is as important as developing technological solutions; engagement and feedback loops are critical.
- Collaboration is a multiplier — projects can benefit from sharing methods, tools, and even training resources to accelerate progress.
- AI and digital technologies hold the potential to support multiple initiatives at once, particularly in areas like predictive modelling, resource optimisation, and user interaction.
These insights raise important questions for future collaboration:
- What common challenges do we all face with data and users?
- Can we share methods or tools between projects to save time and improve results?
- How can AI help multiple projects simultaneously?
- Are there ways to collaborate on training or user engagement?
Looking Ahead
The series has shown that circularity is not just a vision, but an achievable path, provided we continue to learn from one another and strengthen cross-project collaboration. The achievements of AUTO-TWIN, DaCapo, DiCiM, and RESTORE demonstrate that digital solutions are already unlocking value — and that their impact will grow as methodologies mature and scale.
