BIOGEMSE: Bio-Intelligent Products Manufacturing 4 Sustainable Cities

Articles, News

BIOGEMSE is a Horizon Europe project uniting 8 European partners around a shared mission to pioneer a new way of building in modern architecture. The project aims to develop and manufacture bio-intelligent, sustainable, circular, and safe modular construction products, setting the foundation for a construction sector that builds smarter, wastes less, and performs better.

To achieve this, BIOGEMSE is built on three interconnected working fields. The first focuses on circular and sustainable bio-based materials for Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes, expanding their opportunities in the construction sector. At the core of this are green and circular mortars being fine-tuned for AM and new functionalities, including geopolymers developed from biomass ashes, transforming industrial waste into high-performance, clinker-free materials that exemplify a resource-efficient, bio-based future. The second working field centres on the “biologisation” of production through highly flexible, digital, and robotised AM. The third targets manufacturing-enabled bio-intelligent product performance, combining materials, hardware, and software innovation to enable adaptive and smart building components.

On the manufacturing side, BIOGEMSE is pushing the boundaries of 3D printing systems at both hardware and software levels. At the hardware level, a novel robot printing head incorporating kinematic redundancy is being developed. At the software level, advanced monitoring and control tools are being integrated, supported by process and product Digital Twins, simulation workflows, and AI-based decision support tools for Zero Defect Manufacturing. Generative AI tools are also being employed to explore novel bio-mimicking structures, while AM provides the high level of flexibility and customisation these designs require.

Underpinning the entire project is a standardised and interoperable digital framework, alongside a Digital Product Passport that enables full traceability and lifecycle management of materials and components. Environmental impact, circularity, and safety are embedded throughout using Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) methodologies.

The bio-intelligent modular structures developed within BIOGEMSE will be deployed and validated in 3 Smart Living Labs (SLLs), each with different functional requirements and climatic conditions. These real-world environments will serve as testbeds to validate the new products and boost their replication potential at an EU-wide scale.

BIOGEMSE brings together a competitive, industry-driven, multidisciplinary, and value-chain oriented consortium. Technology-driven strategies are complemented by sustainable business models designed for global scale, and by a dedicated training strategy for professional skilling. We are excited to be part of this community and look forward to sharing our progress along the way.
